A Bit History
Penryn is one of the oldest towns in England, with a rich history; Penryn was mentioned in the Doomsday Book in 1086, called Trelivel back then, but existed long before that, from the iron age. In 1216 the name was changed to Penryn by the Bishop Simon of Exeter. Penryn is more than 600 years older than Falmouth and you can feel the history by walking through the streets of Penryn. Some houses are still as they were in 1621. Penryn had been a pirates’ favourite location in the XV century because it had access to the third largest natural port in the world and therefore safe haven in times of storms and bad weather. Three generations of mayors in Penryn were pirates between 1550 and 1650, which was a way of life in Penryn at the time, fact which was known by Queen Elizabeth I yet conveniently overlooked. The pirates of Penryn used to steal valuable merchandise from ships coming from the New World, especially Spanish ships. One of the most famous woman pirate Lady Mary Killigrew used to be a pirate by night - there is a well known story where she and her crew not only killed all the men on board of a Spanish ship and stole the merchandise, but stole the ship itself and sold it! Queen Elizabeth I, which overlooked acts of piracy as it contributed to the wealth of the Kingdom, had to act on such clear evidence of a ship being stolen. Mary Killigrew and her crew were sentenced to death however short time after, Queen Elizabeth I pardoned Lady Mary whilst the others were killed. Her husband, Sir John Killigrew, also a pirate, later founded Falmouth town in 1661 and lived in Arwenack House which is opposite the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth. We have tried to bring a bit of the rich history of Penryn’s piratesque past in our holiday cottage, to keep the story of Penryn alive – which back in the XV century was thriving as a pirate town. The portrait of Lady Mary Killigrew was painted by Anthony Van Dyck and a reproduction of it is here at the top of the staircase. The map in the dining room is from 1610 and was drawn by hand by the great John Speed. Can you spot Penryn on that map? Falmouth did not exist at that time – hence it is not on the map. The pirates were considering having women on board as unlucky, hence why most pirates were men at the time, no women were allowed on the pirate ships, (or women were disguising themselves as men to get in) however pirates believed that a figurehead of a half naked bust woman on the front of the pirate ship was a sign of good luck and was calming the sea. Let’s hope the one in the master bedroom leads to a calm and relaxing holiday for you and your family. St. Mary’s House – the blue building at the front on Commercial Road – was a Police Station in the past and the cottages behind were the private residence of the Chief Inspector and his Deputy. The building next to the line of garages it is now the premise of an osteopath business. The Police Station was closed down more than 40 years ago and the building was sold, later renamed St Mary’s House. However the postal address of Cottage 2 behind still bears the name Cottage 2, The Old Police Station with the Royal Mail register as a key identification for the address.

Where to start. Cottage was excellent, clean, extremely well equipped and so many hidden treasures. The children loved it and the dog was made very welcome. Beds were comfy and plenty of space for our party of six adults, two children and a dog. Garden was useful for dog and children to play. Did not need to bring anything as everything was provided at the cottage. Greg was an amazing host.

Seema Jul 2021

This is a beautifully decorated house. Very well maintained and clean. There were treasure chests around the house with sweets which delighted the kids. Pirate themed board games and puzzles were very nice touch to complement the theme. Greg, the host, was quick to respond and communicated clearly. We enjoyed our stay and recommend this place highly.

The pirate cottage is a fantastic place to stay for all pirate lovers (and even none-lovers). It is sparkling clean and the beds and bedding are really comfortable to sleep in. Gregory and Maria C really went overboard with the pirate theme and we really loved the house full of treasures which was really magical for the kids. There was real chocolate coins in the treasure boxes and games! They felt like they had entered a theme park. It really was that great! The cottage is in a fantastic location and is only about 10mins drive to Falmouth and the surrounding areas are easily accessible. we had a very cosy and comfortable stay and will hopefully be back to stay soon

Maria Oct 2020

We had a wonderful stay at the Pirate cottage. The town is lovely and not too far from Falmouth which has great views and amazing restaurants. The hosts were great and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and welcome. We loved the pirate theme and the board games were a good additional touch. We would definitely return in the future.

The village has a few very friendly pubs a great Indian and Nemos fish n chips were to die for! Highly recommend doing the river walk from Mylor bridge to Pandora Inn, takes about an hour! Great food with views! And also only a short walk into Falmouth which is stunning! So glad I found the Pirates Rest! And the captain is very generous!

We spent six nights at the cottage. Facilities were over and above the expectations. The property was immaculate with regards to cleanliness. The area is nice with shops and amenities within walking distance. Falmouth is just down the road with a multitude of restaurants and shops. Would not hesitate to stay again.

Michelle Aug 2020

Pirate cottage is absolutely amazing. It has lovely decorations throughout, is extremely well equipped, and the hosts are incredibly responsive. Finding the cottage was a breeze with the pre-check in directions given and there was ample parking for two cars. Check in was easy which meant no hassle after a long drive and we were able to get settled in and relax. My 6 year old son loved exploring the cottage with all of its pirate theme. I was immediately impressed with the level of cleanliness and how well the cottage was equipped. Everything we could have wanted was available: pots, pans, and all kitchen equipment; cleaning supplies for dishes and laundry; teas, coffees, sugar; toiletries and a hair dryer; and even family games to play. Nothing was forgotten. The back and front gardens were a lovely place to have a cup of tea or sit out and enjoy an evening drink. The back garden provided ample space for the children and dog to run and play. The location is lovely with an easy 2-3 minute walk into Penryn or a 2 mile walk into Falmouth. Plenty of restaurants and stores nearby. I would definitely check to see if pirate cottage was available for our next trip down to the area.

Gersende Aug 2020

We staid at Greg and Maria Claudia’s place for a short vacation last week and had a truly wonderful stay. The place felt loved and was spotless when we arrived. Greg and Maria thought of absolutely everything you may need during your stay from the toilet paper to a full equipped kitchen with all the tools you may need! We were so well waited for and welcomed that it felt very homely. There were board games for the boys and of course WiFi and a television but also personal touches from the hosts that makes your vacation very special! The boys loved pretending being pirates ????‍☠️ for a short week and we loved being able to travel from one end to the other of Cornwall to visit the most beautiful sites and beaches. Penrhyn is close to Falmouth where you can find pretty much everything you need as well as in Penryn! You will enjoy the fresh fish of the Fishmonger almost next door and the numerous walks and hikes you can do around. Greg and Maria C are definitely spot on with their hospitality. Their kindness is just as outstanding!
